Your Safety

Everyone should know who to call for help In an emergency you should always dial Triple Zero (000). Parents should also teach their children how to call for help.

Prepare for the worst Preparing for the worst can seem morbid, but knowing how you’d get out of your home safely and quickly, leaving keys in locked doors, keeping exits clear, and having a safe meeting place outside the home can help minimise panic in an emergency. If you live in an apartment make sure you know where the fire exists are and never use a lift during a fire. Making sure your street number is visible so emergency services can quickly find you is also a useful precautionary step to take.

Crawl down low and go go go! If there is a fire in your home before you open a door check for heat with the back of your hand, and always close doors behind you, if possible. Always stay as low to the ground as you can, where the air will be cooler and cleaner, and crawl to safety. If it is safe, help others leave the building as quickly as possible and never go back inside for any reason.

Stop, drop, cover and roll If your clothes are alight stop, drop, cover your face with your hands, and roll to smother the flames. Throw a woollen blanket on someone to put flames out.
